General Information:
Smyth County is located in the Southwestern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the Interstate 81 corridor it is situated between Washington and Wythe counties. The County was formed on February 23, 1832 by an act of the General Assembly from two-thirds of then existing Washington County and one-third of then existing Wythe County. It was named in honor of General Alexander Smyth, a general in the War 0f 1812 and a member of Congress from the area for several years. According to the 2000 U.S. Census the population is 33,081 and the total area of the County is 452 square miles.
Within Smyth County are three incorporated towns. Marion (the county seat), Chilhowie, and Saltville. Historic Saltville was a battle site over the saltworks during the Civil War.
Political Profile:
Smyth County leans very strongly Republican in Virginia and Federal elections. In local County elections, the Democrat party dominates. All 5 current Smyth County Constitutional Officers are Democrats and 4 of the 7 members of the Board of Supervisors are Democrats. As of June 2005 18,494 is the current number of registered voters.
