Another Meth Lab Shutdown
Smyth County Investigators have shutdown a meth lab in the Sugar Grove area of the County today according to a TriCities.com article. Smyth County has seen a lull in the amount of meth labs being shutdown recently. It is obvious that they’re probably out there, but weren’t being located.
At times Smyth County has set the record in Virginia for the amount of meth labs discovered.
Something more needs to be done about this problem which is tied into the socioeconomic (big word!) situation. I think a combined approach of education and enforcement would be a good way to go. People need to be educated about drug dangers starting in the elementary school through high school levels. In addition to this education should also be extended to making sure people have a good education by finishing school or attaining GEDs and enrolling in College. That combined with strict enforcement may be a good approach to take.
I find it amazing that Smyth County Law Enforcement do not have any type of D.A.R.E. or equivalent programs in the County’s high schools to my knowledge. This is a critical time in the lives of young people where they make decisions that have a great impact on themselves and ultimately the community. Some type of program needs to be started for high schools.
Something more needs to be and can be done with the drug problem in Smyth County.
